NOP Platform II

Our National Optimists Party has long advocated credit, though we stand foursquare against the enslavement of debt. We are therefore wholly in favor of the bailout, though we find the sums discussed miserly in the extreme and manifestly insufficient to the purpose. We propose to bailout the entirety of the economy, to pardon the whole of the nations debt to itself, using those monies instead to fund a wholesale mobilization of the nations resources for twenty years, during which time we shall -Attain sustainable energy independence -Reform education and healthcare -Construct and deploy a new transportation and communications infrastructure -Develop and implement molecular manufacturing -Conduct large-scale environmental restoration Just think of it! The patents alone for the passel of new inventions well create in the process will, by themselves, generate untold riches for the nation, to say nothing of the wonderful quality of life and enduring appreciation from all quarters, now and forever, that will be ours. Abandon those who hem and haw, trifle, straddle fences. Ours is the era of the epic and we call upon you all of you – to be epic heroes. This is Eve Darling, National Optimists Party candidate for president saying, All hands on deck full speed ahead.

NOP Platform

In a mere fifty years we have been steered from the Empire of Production to the Empire of Consumption- from the Empire of Credit to the Empire of Debt. We were the Land of Abundance. Now we are the Land of Lack. How silly. How frivolous. How wasteful and shameful. Yet we are not here to curse the darkness, but to light a candle. We shall produce again – wisely and for great abundance – the best educated citizenry in the world, the healthiest populace, a new and sustainable energy and transportation infrastructure, smart, green molecular manufacturing – all to our enduring credit and benefit, engendering the gratitude and indebtedness of the whole world for generations to come. This is our National Optimists Party platform – a plan to at once regain our place and legitimize our legacy as the last great hope of earth.

What is Science? From Global Warming to Evolution

Google Tech Talk July 21, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Michael Vassar. What is science? Are science and rationality the same thing? If science was something new, what sort of a new thing was science? I will discuss different ways of knowing, focusing on the differences between the analytic method of the enlightenment and the synthetic method of romanticism (and scholarship classically). These methods should be used together, but in fact their practitioners have been at war since Marx and Rousseau, leading to a schism in Western intellectual history with disastrous consequences. Darwin’s theory of evolution is used as a case study of how these different methods of knowing manifest themselves, and can shape the practice of science in important ways. Michael Vassar is President of the Singularity Institute for AI. Previously, he was a Founder and Chief Strategist at SirGroovy.com, an online music licensing firm. Prior to that, he held positions with Aon, the Peace Corps, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Michael has been writing and speaking on topics related to the safe development of disruptive technologies for a number of years: his papers include the Lifeboat Foundation analysis of the risks of advanced molecular manufacturing co-authored with Robert Freitas, and “Corporate Cornucopia”, authored for the Center for Responsible Nanotechnology Task Force. He holds an MBA and a BS in biochemistry.

Brickheads – Osteobots Practice Skit.mpg

For the 2010 Body Forward First Lego League season, we have chosen a project that is for patients with osteopenia (low bone mass) and a way to prevent osteoporosis. We have combined the current technologies of stem cell research, synthetic materials to mineralize the new bone quickly, and nanotechnology. Although nanobots seem like a way off in the future idea, the truth is they should be being used for medical procedures by 2020. In order to build nanobots, you would have to do what most people feel is impossible, but IBM has already achieved it! IBM has recently achieved the ability to build things 1 molecule at a time. This breakthrough is called molecular manufacturing. Up until now all we’ve known of is atomic level manufacturing, but all of that is about to change drastically. The stem cells that would be delivered by the nanobots or stimulated to reproduce themselves quicker in younger patients are called osteoblasts. Osteoblasts are new bone cells that start out soft, but mineralize over time with the help of minerals like calcium and phosphorus. Researchers have discovered that electro spun and elctrosprayed nanfibrous materials mineralize osteoblasts at a much higher rate than regular minerals. Nanobots will be able to be built with numerous different substances like synthetic hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite is a new synthetic ceramic that actually promotes the growth of osteoblasts in test trials. The nanobots will deliver the stem cells, the electro spun
